Claude Brown Writers & Readers Series

Begun in 2000, the Claude Brown Writers & Readers Series brought D.C. adult learners together with a published writer each month in a moderated discussion of reading, writing, and self-expression. The series featured locally and nationally known writers who gave lectures on their work in a lively moderated discussion, led participants in a writing activity, and then provided an autographed copy of the author’s book to each attendee.

This unique and interactive format provided adult learners with an opportunity to experience the transformative power of reading and writing and to complement the skill building they get from GED and Adult Basic Education programs. The program was named after Claude Brown, author of the bestseller Manchild In the Promised Land. Brown was one of the featured authors in 2002, just months before he passed. Other featured authors were Tayari Jones, Kim Frazier, Doug Levitt, Jabari Asim, Michelle Singletary, Kenneth Carrol, James Horton, James W. Loewen, E. Ethelbert Miller, Michael Fletcher, Dawayne Williams, and many more.

In 2009, the series was moderated by Joy Jones in the Langston Room at Busboys and Poets and sponsored by the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education, Busboys and Poets, and Teaching for Change. Here are photo albums from four of the sessions that year.
