Leading and Learning Together: Cultivating School Change From Within

On the evening of Wednesday, February 26, educators, activists, and community members gathered at Busboys and Poets, Takoma Park for the monthly Beyond Heroes & Holidays series. Co-hosted by Busboys and Poets and Teaching for Change, the event was held in partnership with the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL).

Co-authors Lynda Tredway and Matthew Militello of Leading and Learning Together: Cultivating School Change from Within

Authors Lynda Tredway and Matthew Militello shared insights from their new book, Leading and Learning Together: Cultivating School Change From Within. They highlighted the power of dynamic mindfulness, personal narratives, and community learning exchanges.

Rather than solely talking about the book, the authors modeled exercises documented in the book and shared insights as to why they use them. They opened with a collective reading of “The Low Road” by Marge Piercy, emphasizing the importance of solidarity, organizing, and resistance.

Attendees joined in interactive conversations about the poem and the Community Learning Exchange Axioms.

The event handout included the poem “The Low Road by Marge Piercy, Community Learning Exchange Axioms, and the Resilience Manifesto

The presentation concluded with a reading of three points from the Resilience Manifesto

1. A wellspring of resilience is inside us. We are stronger than we think.

3. We cultivate resilience so that we can thrive, not simply to survive.

10. We cultivate our resilience and become stronger so that we can help others become stronger; we cultivate our resilience so that we have energy to heal and transform the world.
